What the limits have in common
In the US, 22 × 14 × 9 in is the norm. American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Alaska, Hawaiian, Breeze and Avelo all use it, and Delta, Alaska and Hawaiian also cap the three sides at 45 in added together. Sun Country allows the biggest US bag here, 24 × 16 × 11 in.
In the UK and Europe, 56 × 45 × 25 cm is common: easyJet, British Airways and Jet2. Ryanair’s and Wizz Air’s paid cabin bags are smaller, at 55 × 40 × 20 cm and 55 × 40 × 23 cm.
In Asia, 56 × 36 × 23 cm is common: AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air and Cathay Pacific. Otherwise Singapore Airlines allows 115 cm in total and Scoot allows 54 × 38 × 23 cm.
In Canada it’s 55 × 40 × 23 cm on Air Canada and 56 × 36 × 23 cm on WestJet; in Australia, 56 × 36 × 23 cm on Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia.
Outside North America, most airlines weigh cabin bags. In the US only Frontier, Sun Country and Breeze weigh them, and no Canadian airline here does; in Europe Ryanair, Wizz Air and Jet2 10 kg and easyJet 15 kg; in Asia AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air, Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific 7 kg and Scoot 10 kg; in Australia Jetstar 7 kg, Qantas 10 kg and Virgin Australia 8 kg. AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air, Scoot, Cathay Pacific and Jetstar weigh the cabin bag and small bag together.
Where the overhead bin costs extra
On Frontier, Allegiant, Sun Country, Breeze, Avelo, Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air, the cheapest fare includes only a small bag that fits under the seat in front of you. A carry-on for the overhead bin is a paid extra, cheapest when added while booking and dearest at the gate. United’s Basic Economy, Air Canada’s Economy Basic and WestJet’s UltraBasic work the same way on most routes.
Check what your fare includes before you pack, then compare the under-seat limits on the personal item page.
Small planes have smaller bins
- American Airlines: On American Eagle regional flights a carry-on bigger than the personal item limit has to be valeted: it’s tagged and checked at the gate, free, and you get it back on the jet bridge. Embraer 175 flights take carry-ons as normal.
- Delta Air Lines: On Delta Connection flights with 50 seats or fewer, only your personal item goes on board. Carry-on bags are checked free at the gate with a pink Gate Claim tag and handed back as you get off.
- United Airlines: On CommutAir flights only a personal item is allowed. Other United Express planes take carry-ons but have less room, so bags are often checked at the gate and returned at baggage claim or on the jet bridge.
United Airlines’s gate-checked bags are returned at baggage claim or on the jet bridge, depending on the plane.

Questions
What is the standard carry-on size?
In the US, 22 × 14 × 9 in (56 × 36 × 23 cm): American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Alaska, Hawaiian, Breeze and Avelo all use it, wheels and handles included. In the UK and Europe the common cabin bag limit is 56 × 45 × 25 cm, used by easyJet, British Airways and Jet2. In Asia it’s 56 × 36 × 23 cm, on AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air and Cathay Pacific. In Canada it’s 55 × 40 × 23 cm on Air Canada and 56 × 36 × 23 cm on WestJet; in Australia, 56 × 36 × 23 cm on Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia.
Do wheels and handles count?
On almost every airline, yes: the limit is the bag’s outside size, wheels, handles and pockets included. Wizz Air is the exception: it doesn’t count them, but wheels may add no more than 5 cm.
Is there a carry-on weight limit?
Rarely in the US: of the 12 US airlines here, only Frontier, Sun Country and Breeze set one (Frontier, Sun Country and Breeze 35 lb). In Europe most do: Ryanair, Wizz Air and Jet2 10 kg and easyJet 15 kg. British Airways only asks that you can lift the bag into the locker yourself. In Asia every airline here sets one: AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air, Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific 7 kg and Scoot 10 kg. In Australia Jetstar 7 kg, Qantas 10 kg and Virgin Australia 8 kg; no Canadian airline here sets one.
Which airline allows the biggest carry-on?
The biggest limit here is 24 × 16 × 11 in on Sun Country, about 69 litres. Elsewhere the biggest is 56 × 45 × 25 cm on easyJet, British Airways and Jet2, about 63 litres. On Sun Country and easyJet that bag is a paid extra.
What happens if my bag is too big at the gate?
It goes in the hold, usually for a fee. On United a Basic Economy bag checked at the gate costs $75; on Ryanair a bag over 55 × 40 × 20 cm without Priority is refused or put in the hold for €/£70–€/£75; easyJet charges £60 for a large cabin bag at the airport. Measure before you leave.
